Ok... I was always a fan of Batman - 1960's childhood. But a NIUE 2 ounce $5.00 coin - 7,500 mintage and a price tag of $250 from the Royal Canadian Mint. It's a stretch at $125/ounce.

I think, at the beginning, it was available for less ($169) not via RCM.
And at that time I had doubts.

Now looking at the coin image (scan?) on RCM website, it looks like the frosting has been done without great quality. Many marks appear, like on the bullion coins, that delivered in the tubes.

I just searched ebay and there is three available from one seller at $159.99 US$ Buy it Now...

So, my question is why now from the mint? (it's a 2014 coin) and Why so expensive? if as I expect the cost to the mint is likely $100 or less.

I got an e-mail about this coin from my RCM rep nearly a month ago.

Yet it's still available. Niue - 'nuff said.

Wow, got an email from the RCM this morning on this coin. Didn't even realize it wasn't an RCM product until I saw this thread, clearly shows how quickly I wasn't interested in this one.

It's made by the Sunshine Mint.

I got the email one month ago. I guess they have trouble selling them and are trying to reach more customers.

The problem is the high mintage of 7500. It seems anything over 1500 units have trouble selling out. The Star Trek Sets sold quickly at 1500 units but the individual Star Coins are not sold out at 5000 units.

I'm sorry if there was a thread a while back - but I did do a bit of a scan to see if anybody else had started anything about the Batman coin... there wasn't at the time I posted this - this morning. Why was another thread started this afternoon? No idea.

I did post it here (Canadian NCLT) only because the email I received this morning originated from the Royal Canadian Mint.

After receiving the email, I contacted my rep and asked him two question - Why so expensive (considering the original price), and why now as "new listing" of a 2014 coin... his response:

"Good morning,
You are correct on both points.
Unfortunately I do not have a say in the price.
Keep in mind that 160 USD is about 200 to 205 Canadian plus shipping
Have a great day."

So how does that work? Niue commissions a Batman coin to be made then outsources the work to Sunshine Mint who makes the coins and ships them to distributors?

More like the Sunshine Mint wants to make money selling a commemorative round. They know it will sell better if it has a denomination especially if it says 'dollar' and they can call it a coin. They pay the government of Niue to issue the coin in their name.

If that was the case, why is the RCM selling them for $249.99 when other dealers are selling for $200 or less?

Sure they can charge $1000 if they like but everyone is selling them for less than $200, it does not make business sense since no one is going to pay $50 more than the going rate for the coin.

You would be surprised how many people dont look for cheaper prices else where, same as ebay , some items sell for much more then it should, its called a stupid tax, if you too stupid to shop around then you get to pay the stupid tax.
