The following is an excerpt from the Canadian Coin NewsOn today's date in 1954, the Toronto Transit Commission opened the Yonge Street subway - the first ever subway in Canada.
Throughout its more than 60 years in service, the Yonge Street subway has accepted various TTC tokens as fare. All tokens have been the same diameter, measuring slightly smaller than a Canadian dime.
Prior to 1954, all TTC tokens issued were brass; however, after the city's first subway opened, these brass tokens were replaced with lightweight aluminum tokens produced by the
Royal Canadian Mint. The new tokens were simple, with the word "SUBWAY" engraved on both sides, surrounded by either "TORONTO TRANSIT COMMISSION" (obverse) or "GOOD FOR ONE FARE" (reverse).
