Since it is some brass alloy, and green corrosion on the reverse. Even with the case it is only worth what somebody whats to pay for it. A lot of the old medals on ebay are over priced, that's why they keep showing up over and over again.
I have seen medals and tokens of similar ages in the bargain bin at the local coin shop.
Since it is a generic medal not listing a person, place in the awards ranking and add to the fact that the date 1906 appears to have been added after the fact by engraving, and doesn't have the same patina as the rest of the medal. It could have been a souvenir medal sold or given to exhibitors that didn't win anything.
Don't know where you heard that it is worth $10,000+. Maybe you might get $10.00+ if somebody really wanted it.
And sometimes a case is just a box and doesn't add value to a medal

There is definitely a market for these - just google Winnipeg Industrial Exhibition and you'll find a few good collections and articles, but I'm not sure about price. Try a few of the coin clubs with the articles and they may be able to direct you to someone since it's a specialized field of collecting. One piece of advice: don't attempt to clean it, it's fine as it is for now.

If it is the 35 mm medal, then around £30. There are a lot of these about. If it had been named to an exhibitor/winner then you could double that.
