Is it usual to get all junk when metal detecting? I mean I know I dont have the best metal detector but I should get something shouldn't I? I went to a open grassland today where there should have been good stuff, but I didn't find anymoney at all just a wire, 3 pull tabs, 2 nails,1 screw, and some wrappers that had some foil on it. Is it usual to get such bad luck?

Its normal to find a lot of junk but if the area is high traffic you should also find coins. Open grassland is not very descriptive. Was it a park? I don't know what detector you have but you should be able to test it with coins. sweep an area in your yard and make sure there is no metal left. Then place each kind of coin on the ground and sweep your detector over it. This will give you an idea of the sound each type of coin makes.

I don't have a detector anymore but when I was a kid my father had one and I used to play around with it, I did find some junk but also found rings, matchbox cars, keys and coins pretty much everytime I went out. I would usually be out there a pretty good while though, from your finds I am guessing you were out there less than 30 minutes? This was when metal detectors weren't that good so from what I have seen here on these forums and what I remember from childhood I would think something is wrong. What nohope said is probably the best thing to try to see what the beeps sound like for each coin

Hi Detector
did you ground balance the machine before starting ?
how deep were the trash finds ?
what was your discrimination setting when you were using the detector ?
how fast were you moving ? overlapping your swings ?
Its not unusual to find alot of trash in areas like around a soccer field ,pull tabs, can slaw, foil and many other things ,,But there should be a coin or two mixed in there also .

I had the same luck as you for over 2 years. I detected around baseball diamonds in a county park and a few picinic areas. All I ever found was pull tabs and junk. I dug alot and was never rewarded.
I read this forum and decided to try and search around a park attached to an elementary school this past weekend. I found $.77 (One quarter, a couple dimes, and a lot of pennies - 1 was a wheat) and a two tone braided ring (not sure if it is gold, silver or plated yet).
I will post pictures tomorrow of my haul for 3 hours of searching. I Still dug up some garbage, but it was nice to find a coin finally. Plus less pull tabs, since the youngsters aren't drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon.
Keep trying

I am going to have to get me another one, I have a old school with a gym separate from the school about a block from my house that was built in the late 1800's (I have lived in my house 18 years and lived even closer to the School 12 years before that and never seen anyone search there). The school is now closed but I did go to school there in 4th,5th,and 6th grades (elementary school) and the gym is where they held all the sock hops, halloween haunted house, and everything else you can think of back then. I sure would like to just see what one could find over there, there is also 3 baseball fields right beside the gym (small one way road between them and the gym) that has been there forever also (the little leaguers still play there) that may be worth checking out also

Don't get discoraged. Some places have been "hit hard". It sounds like your doing everything right . What you discribed are tipical finds and there should be coins in the mix. Once you start finding coins they will come easy. Just keep digging ! Good Luck.

It is possible that a more experienced person had already detected the area and skipped over certain types of trash because they recognized them without even digging them up.

Your only gonna find it if its there. Try a couple other spots and see if you get the same results.

Don't give up. I went through the same for a while when I bought my first bounty Hunter. Now Iam on my third and waiting for my Time Ranger to come in the mail (my fourth). My issue was (I think) attempting to find the old stuff without much research. So I changed my attack plan and went after clad and rings. I am 7 rings for the years (3 good ones) and if I keep it up this time next year I'll cash my coins in for a nice collector coin (GRIN). The Bounty Hunter I am using is a Discovery 2200 and cost $35.00 at a garage sale. Cheap detector and I am slow with it, but we get the job done and it has way more than paid for itself. Just don't give up.

I have been using Bounty Hunter detectors for almost 5 years now. I started out finding only trash and gave up after a few hunts. I was in my local coin shop one day and a guy came in and sold a bunch of old coins that he had found while detecting and I decided to try again. I have been at it ever since! It takes some time to learn your machine and the basics of mnetal detecting before you start to find good stuff. patience is key and if you can find another detectorist to hunt with it will help you learn much faster.
I average $500-$600 per year in clad which always goes towards my coin collection. Not to mention the "keeper" coins and assorted jewelry and other neat stuff I've found.
