Just read this Yahoo Article

Does this apply to Metal Detector Finds of Jewelry? Though this could make for an interesting discussion...

I am looking for coins, but found a ring the other day. Not a $10K ring, but a ring just the same. Maybe I should put a craigslist post up for 30 days in the lost and found section

That is also the law in Australia. I'm not sure if its 30 days, and I believe the various States have different conditions, but any item found is not automatically yours.

I say finders keepers. However, it would be awesome to reunite a ring to someone if it was of sentimental value to them. That would be more satisfying than selling the ring I think.

I am looking into buying a metal detector too. Originally I was hoping to stumble upon civil war artifacts but now that I am more into coins, that'd be nice to find too and hey, a 10k ring? Who couldn't want that as a find?

I once found a ring outside a hospital in the parking lot. It was 14k gold with a diamond in it (small diamond; probably 20 points) and probably worth 200-250 max. I gave it to my mother who traded it for a pair of socks! She thought it was costume I guess... go figure. Never again; I keep what I find now!

G'day, the law where I live is the Common Law, as modified by local statute.
Here, finders are encouraged, but not compelled, to hand found property to Police. If it is not claimed within 3 months, the Police hand it back. For practical purposes, the finder becomes the new owner.
People who do not follow this process leave themselves open to be charged with statutory stealing (formerly called "larceny by finding").
If you want to research the subject further, I suggest you search a law-related website. Try keywords such as "treasure trove": there have been some interesting cases, relating to very valuable property.

I guess it's all about education. I mean technically, we could be committing a crime without thinking so and end up in jail! Gee, that's par for the course for me the last couple years... guess I'll check it out to be sure.
