Hi
I am new to this, so please be patient.
I have a lot of coins collected by my father in-law over the years, we kept it in an old shoe box for almost 20 years, I discovered it today and would like to know how to store them properly and where can I find a list or some sort of a value list, the coins are from various countries, some are very old ones, a 1893 coin with a 3 in front and a head of queen victoria on the back, small and it is silver,a 10 pfennig 1876 and a penny 1886

Hi Philisty,
Welcome to the Coin Community forum. If you have a lot of foreign coins I suggest you locate a copy of the World Coin Book. It's expensive but you may be able to get a copy at your local library. If you have a few coins and need information enter a web link to a photograph of the coin or post a scan of the coin and the forum members will help you gather information on it. They're a good group of people here and are always willing to help.

Hi Philisty, Welcome to the forum. Does your 1893 coin look like the 3 pence here: http://www.tclayton.demon.co.uk/pics/three.html Evidently there are two types of 1893 3 pence coins-"jubilee head" and "old head". The values are on the website as well- I can't vouch for their accuracy. The coin confitions listed are fine, very fine, extra fine and uncirculated, and are given in UK pounds- if you google "pound to rand" online conversion you'll find up to date exchange rates. THe clayton site linked above also gives a bit about coin grading-but you may wish to seach online or ask in the UK section for how to grade a specific coin such as your silver 3d. I'm assuming your 1886 penny has Victoria on teh front as well, if so here are penny values acoording to the same site: http://www.tclayton.demon.co.uk/val...nny.html#QV. But if there is a man's portrait on teh obverse. Handle your coins by the edges only. A cool, dry place is best for storage, adn depending on value, what you want to spend to preserve them, etc there are many storage options. Lest expensive are what we call 2x2s in the US. They are nonreacive plastic windows in a cardboard holder. They're a few cents each in the US and protect coins well. Get a list together, and scan the higher denominatiion coins (or photograph them) if you can. The UK and world coin folks are likely going to be your quickest source of info, but many of us will try to help. Don
