Hi
I have this 1850 large cent but the edge is not like any in the books. Is this a legitimate coin or a fake?
Thanks Norm

It's a legitimite coin, its just been "worked" on after it left the mint.

I agree its some form of post mint damage to a original coin but I have no idea why someone would actually do something like that to it unless they were getting ready to make a necklace or something like that out of the coin and wanted to give it a little character to draw the eye towards it.

Edit: I said its a authentic coin but I am only going by what I can see and really shouldn't have said that without seeing the whole Obverse and Reverse of the coin

I've seen large cents like that before that were attached to a handle and it would be used to make pie crusts with it. I'm guessing that someone made this one for this purpose.

When they do that it is to use it as a crimping wheel to seal the edge of the top crust to the bottom one. I've seen several as well including one made from a 1793 chain cent.

There we go, Condor got it right. I don't cook, so I figured that was used to make the edges of the pie.

I really liked the PIE idea, so I showed the coin to my wife who was not impressed and showed me one that she uses to make home made noddles
