A while back I posted a 2014 LSC that had a 30 degree rotation. I was wondering if there is a ballpark figure as to how many may have been minted? If the dies was put into the press in coin turn fashion and became loose then I would think less were minted then if the dies were put into the press rotated at the get go. Thoughts please. Thanks,

Hi John - I have wondered the same thing so I'm interested in the answer. Most of the tooling I've been around is keyed to be in line right out of the gate. But I think that in order to do more frequent dressing of the tool between rehubbing that there are parts that are perhaps are not keyed or keyed as well to allow ease in removal? Or perhaps keyed but aligned with a woodruff key that is suceptible to shearing thus allowing rotation. Pure theory on my part but I've never read up on it to prove/disprove it. If the woodruff fails slowly then the tooling will begin to rotate little by little. As for the fixed rotations it would seem to suggest a setup error (90, 180). Any deviation from there would be the result of slippage.

Just guesses on my part based on observations of tooling I've been around. Be careful!

Too many nebulous factors complicate arriving at an answer.
-- average die life?
-- did they catch it early?
-- did they catch it late?
-- did they catch it at all?
And probably a few others that didn't occur to me.

Yes kanga that's why I said ballpark figure. A modern die makes an average of ? coins. I figure if the die was in tight the whole time then the dies made x amount of the rotated die coins. If the dies were loose then I am guessing that the press made a bunch of noise bringing the attention to the press operator to fix the problem resulting in less rotated die coins being produced. Just my theory.

As kanga said, there are way too many variables.
