Hey all,
I'm sort of beginning this ancient coin collecting... been collecting US for a little over a year...
What is your opinion on this coin... He tells me it is 18mm and from the Heraclea mint. I am looking at purchasing... what would be too much?
thanks

The Fel Temp coinage is one of the most common types of late Roman bronzes, and this coin, RIC VIII Heraclea 90, is a very common example-- rated c2. I would not give much for this coin, but then again, I do not collect this series.

The coin has some issues though. The obverse is a little rough, some pitting, and the reverse has a bit of a weak strike. So it is not that great an example of a very common coin. I would not give more than 10-15 dollars for this coin, but would expect to find an example on E-bay for around five dollars or less.

with Victor. These are very common and do not sell for very much.

I would start with Wayne Sayles "Ancient Coin Collecting." This is a good survey of ancient coin collecting. After you figure out what time period interests you the most, then buy more topic specific books. I personally have dozens of books related to my interest, and I am always looking for more!
