I am trying to find information on how to determine if a coin is a SMS, I saw the other post on SMS and no helpful information, except...you can't actually have one, they are too rare...ok, so again how do you determine the difference? They may be scarce, rare or whatever, but that is not the question, the question is , how do you tell them apart. I am wanting educational information, not trying to say I found one. Thank you.

Wrongalot, not quite sure what you need. If SMS stands for Special Mint Set, not rare at all. Can be had all day for a slight premium. As for a difference between circulation coins and SMS, none that I know of. SMS dies were not as highly polished as used for proofs but more than thoose used for circulation.

HI Wrongalot,

I 'll try and give you a hand here. I happened upon this auction :

http://coins.ha.com/common/view_ite...=5550&src=pr

There is a little information there, at least about this particular coin. I guess from the statement that there are 15-25 known would indicate that these are very rare indeed. I have heard before about possible "experimental strikes" in 1964 of the new SMS dies, but don't know where ,and can't remember much about it right now. I will keep searching for information since I am interested in this also. Hope that helps a little anyway .

I already saw this one and it did not give enough information as to how to tell the difference. Oh well, the search continues.....

The problem is that there IS no way to conclusively tell if a coin is a SMS coin or just a business strike unless it is still in a sealed government issued holder. Once they are out of the holders (and the 1964 coins were never in a holder.) then it is all a matter of opinion. The only difference that anyone has ever been able to really say is "They look better than a regular business strike but not as nice as a proof." Very vague. And pretty much the only opinion that matters is that of PCGS or NGC. And if you submit the same coin multiple times the SMS/business strike designation comes and goes. So they only real answer is that in the eyes of the marketplace, it is only an SMS if PCGS or NGC says it is.

I agree that it would be almost impossible to tell a circulated SMS coin from a regular Business strike coin. The only way to tell for sure is like Conder101 said, if its still in the SMS packaging. There may be some way to tell for sure by die characteristics but if there are any differences I haven't read it anywhere on how to tell for sure. I mean in all reality a Proof is always a pro0of and a SMS should always be a SMS but how to tell the difference, I just don't know
