Since there were 40% silver half dollars from 1965 to 1970, has there ever been a case of a half dollar on quarter stock during this time period?

There's a 1971-D quarter dollar struck on 40% silver clad stock rolled to quarter thickness. It's also off-center on a straight-clipped planchet. I wrote about it in Coin World (4/22/13). The article can be found at this link: http://editions.amospublishing.com/...rong%20stock

You got me thinking about that guy who found that 1977 D half that was struck on a 40% blank. I still don't know how that managed to happen.

Probably was from a 76S 40% half, and not from a pre-1971 half.

Makes me wonder if there's every been any 40% 1977 quarters accidentally struck now.

I think it would be impossible since there is a copper core to a 40% half dollar.

San Francisco shipped rejected planchets to Denver to be used for business strike coinage. They weren't supposed to ship any of the 40% planchets but some apparently got mixed in with the clad planchets and shipped.

The problem with this theory is that all of the 40% Bicentennial coins were struck in 1975. It explains the 1974-D 40% silver pieces because they struck 1974 coins halfway through 1975. But why do we get 40% silver on Denver almost two years later but no 76-D 40% coins?
