Has anyone noticed that the original poster of the purported dimes seems to have dissappeared into the woodwork?! I'm beginning to get a sickening feeling that none of us is going to get any dimes!
Morgan Fred: I think I finally figured out the problem with your humidity gauge while up here in extremely dry Prescott: no fair plugging it into your Desert Water Bag!

The dimes look great. To fight the humidity in Florida, I run the air conditioner 12 months of the year. and keep the coins in a air tight safe or safety deposit box. In each one I keep a HYGROMETER very small digital ones can be purchased at cigar stores for less than $10.00 each I have been maintaining aprox 39% humidity at both sites. I also keep silica pack stores with the coins. Thus you can send those dimes here for storage as well. I am interested in what humidity range the rest of you keep your coins to prevent damage?

Would it be practical to use a dehumidifier instead of an air conditioner? They work on the same principle, but these sit in the middle of a room and have more surface area for water condensation. quote:

I've been casually looking for a little better humidity gauge (gives me more credibility in these inane threads , but I would never have thought to look in a cigar store. It certainly makes a lot of sense. quote:

As low as possible. I start to feel concern if my room (travel trailer) humidity rises above 50% or 60%. I threw in a bunch of those little dehumidifier capsules that are found in medications into my coin container (Sentry fire/water resistant case) this past summer while in the very humid northeast, but I don't know if they actually kept the humidity down. adobero1, I think Metalman left town for a few days. Trust me, he is not one to abandon a meandering thread like this. Fred

I am using the 450 grams silica gel pack that can be recharged in an oven, they seem to work well.

I never thought of them although I've been dimly aware of their existence. Guess they never jumped out at me at Walmart although I'm sure they're in there somewhere. I really should get some, not only for my coins but also for drying my pipe tobacco (the company decreases the amount of tobacco in a tin, but keeps the weight the same by adding water); I don't like smoking steam. I've been using a 60w bulb on my tobacco, but this wouldn't be too practical for my coin case. When I owned a sailboat (30' Buccaneer in WA San Juan Islands), I used the boaters' trick of turning on and hanging a 100w bult in the boat to keep the humidity down. [/ramble] Fred

Now I know why I was so attracted to this thread, it was inane! (Morgan Fred quote) It's getting far too scientific for me now, all this talk of hygrometers, grams of silica, pipe tobacco...my head is spinning...
Seriously though Metalman, I think we would quickly diminish your collection of dimes if we all were to take you up on your generous offer! Of course, if you have a few extra gold nuggets layin around...
