Back in the day when I would cash my checks I would ask for dollar coins for odd amounts and just throw them in a piggy bank(actually a duck but who's looking). I just recently got into collecting a little and decided to go thru them. I'm pretty sure this is a wide band. What would it grade at?

Hello fiddler

Welcome to the forum !

I think this coin is the narrow rim ,, from the pics I can't really tell if the coin shows some minor wear on the reverse (eagles breast )if that is a product of the picture then I would grade it at MS-62 ,, if it is wear which would require better pictures to tell ,,I would change my opinion to AU.

I get it now. What I'm really looking for is not so much a wider rim but the date being closer to the rim. Now why don't they just say that in the Red Book?

You can look for it either way.
Actually, the position of the date is the same
on both. the date was never moved, it was just that the
rim is a liitle wider, making it look that way.
they call it wide rim or near date. wide rim should be
the correct term for this variety.
it is only on the 79.
