Hi all:

One of my website visitors found a James Garfield (20th US Pres) token like the one pictured below. My knowledge of exonumia is very limited, but I'm not worried about taking on exonumia research, because of all my smart friends here at Coin Community who are always so willing to help:

Here is the pic:

If anyone knows anything about this item, please let me know.
Rest in Peace

I'm no expert on exonumia and especially on President tokens, but I've seen tokens like this before. I may be all wet, but didn't one of the private mints, e.g., Franklin Mint put out a President series complete with folder not too many years ago? (It may still be on-going if it was a subscription type issue.) I do not know if the series was restricted in the numbers minted, but it's been my observation that private mint issues, probably with some exceptions do not retain their purchase value because they put out so many.

What's on the reverse?

I don't have a photo, but my reader states the following:

ON THE BACK IT STATES WHEN HE WAS ASSASSINATED ALONG WITH A QUOTE THAT SAYS "NOT A MAN OF IRON BUT OF LIVE OAK"

Hope this helps!

Thanks to those who have tried to help!

Looks like a "gas station token" usually from Shell. they were big on collector series coins.Made by the Frankli Mint. They did have a presidential series. What does the reverse look like ?

Hi grovey:

Thanks for responding. I wasn't provided with a photo of reverse. What I do know about the reverse is stated in Post #4 above.

I think you're right about this being a Shell medal. Someone else told me the same thing, but wasn't sure.

Shell and Sunoco both issued promotional tokens in 1961. You might have him check the diameter, they were all 26mm. I've never seen one but it seems like they would have had their logos on them.
