Sorry Frosty, I do not have the answer to your question, but I'm sure someone will be able to help. You can try posting the pictures only() in the world coin section with the same question. There are experts that may be able to help you that frequent that section more often.

Regardless, if you were the high bidder on this coin, you are better off finding out if it's real before you are the winning bidder...This section where you posted is a great place to ask this, but we do ask that new members refrain from posting external links right away.

My suggestion to you, in a circumstance like this, would be to copy and paste the pictures from the auction into the appropriate area here and ask the authenticity question. Then you will have an idea of whether or not you will want to bid.

Oh, and where are my manners, Welcome to the forum!!

Welcome to the forum, frosty!

We have some experts on Spanish Colonial coins (I'm not one of them) who can give a more definitive answer; however, I'd say it definitely has a fair chance of being real.

I have an 1807 2 reale coin for comparison and the portrait looks like a pretty good match. This coin also has a whole lot of "chop marks." These were used in the Orient to mark good silver; however they reduce the market value of the coin. If I were to counterfeit this coin, I'd not chop mark it and reduce the sale price.

I'm sure some of our forum experts can give you a better answer (though the pictures are kinda small, especially the reverse).

G'day, one factor in identifying counterfeit coins of this type is the weight. Another is the edge-markings, if any.
You might try to weigh it, and to add a pic of the edge.

Bilbo, there are some collectors who would pay more for a chopmarked coin simply because of the history involved. I have several 8 reales, a US Trade dollar, and a British Trade dollar that I chose simply for the reason that they do bear chopmarks. :)

I'd love to see a picture of your 2 reales coin, sometime.
