What causes this to happen, This dime has a smooth edge, I used digital calipers and it reads 17.76 across with a thickness of 1.33mm,,,, a regular dime is 17.84mm across with a thickness of 1.23 and both weight at 3 grams. There are no signs of the edge being ground off or sanded
Those symptons also show for a broadstruck coin but I cannot see (at lease on the left side obverse) any wide strike evidence. That along with the reduction in weight and thicker coin rim height that it was most likely altered. so, in agreement with the sanding type theory.
The second picture distinctly shows remnants of the original reeded edge. Could a broadstruck coin have a similar appearance? I doubt it. This dime has been nicely reconfigured by an enterprising post-mint entrepreneur I would think.
