Assuming I was wanting to Start this fun hobby what would be the best equipment to use? For work I use a TSS340/350 or an Innovatum system but as both these systems are well over 500lbs each and are normally used under water. I don't think they would be practicle for one person operations. I just want a good quality detector at a reasonable price. So all you experts out there speak up please...

Well Nohope, i use already a few decades a Garret freedom Ace 1, this detector does not weight a lot, and has a good ground balance, also I can recommand a Viking, or a Tesoro Bandido, both detecters I know as loyal and good detectors.
Greetings, Carl

While searching detectors, and dont get me wrong the ones mentioned by carl are good detectors,
Check out the whites line of detectors
features that any detector you buy should have are target ID, and depth meter. they will pay for themselve time and again.
Of Course I use a whites !

Rick, Richard,
i think personal that a "simple" detector for start will do, as long as you get a known brand, doesn't matter if it's a White, Tesoro, Garret or Minelab, they don't have "bad" detectors, but be aware of imitations, and low budget detectors.
Here we have at the "kijkshop" detectors as well for less then 100 euro, but in comparence to one of the above mentioned detectors, it's kidsstuff. In the states they have the radio shak detectors, who are just as good as our kijkshop detectors, nice for the kids, but not good at all for a good coin hunt, like rick sayd, look for a detector whit a Ground balance, dept meter and target ID, and compare those with the scheeper stuff, then you know the difference Richard.
Greetings, Carl

I've used Garrett's for over 10 years now. Started with a GTA500, then bought an ACE250 this year for my son. Funny thing is, I ended up using the ACE 250 as my primary machine and let junior use the 500.
For $200, you can't beat the ACE 250. Let me tell you, this machine is spot on picking up nickels. In the first week using the 250 I dug more nickels than in the previous 10 years with the 500. IMO, you'll do very well with this machine.

Thanks All I have been using Magmetometers/Gradiometers for Years but usually proton or Cesium Gas ones I have very little experience with induction coils I want something a little above the basic but I also want something I will not grow out of any time soon. I will browse ebay for the models you all mentioned and let you know what I decide on. Katrina was good for some thing in that I found foundations for what was probably a house on my land in Mississppi while I was surveying damaged trees. There is no record of a building ever having been there in my family and they have had the land for over 100 years.

Cool story about your land in Mississippi- did you find anything? Let me know if you find any cannon balls or mortars or such... my dad collects those. :)
I bought my metal detector last year and went out a few times, but didn't find anything of real value yet (a couple of 9 mm live rounds, some pennies, and plenty of junk). I think I need to do some research and locate a good place to hit. I'm in Milwaukee, if anyone has ideas!

Where abouts in Mississippi is your property? My great Aunt was located in Biloxi right across from one of the new casinos. Her good fortune was that she moved about a year ago, but only about a mile inland in Gulfport. Serious house damage, but she had evacuated early and all is well. Mike

Hi Mike The nearest town (If you can call three houses a town) is Gillsberg My property is in Amite County about mid way between Gillsberg and Liberty. I lost a fair amount of trees to Katrina and some dammage to the house. I have not taken the detector over there yet but once everything is fixed up I will go play in the ruins.
