Yeah Jerry. I think it's an N-20. The pic doesn't allow close ups so it's kinda hard to tell. N-7 and N-8 are almost exactly identical. I reviewed several pics of all three varieties and concluded it's an N-20. As far as sharpness it might just squeak a EAC 20. Market grade of VF-20 for sure but 25 is iffy. The coin really does need a bath because I see early signs of PVC reactivity. Nice coin overall. 1848 N-20 R.1 20/20.
I use United States Copper Cents 1816-1857 by Howard Newcomb. I also cross reference with sights like Heritage,Goldberg and NGC Variety Plus. I think I erred on my rarity designation for this coin it's an R.3.
When you bring up the correct issue year, list the results by "Highest Grade First." The higher grade coins are the ones which will have the longer writeups, including discussion of the variety attributes.
