So, I know I've seen these before, but don't remember much about them. It looks like damage from the mint. I say this only because the damage is the same color as the rest of the coin. What's up with it? And any approximate value?

It's a clipped planchet - the mechanism which advances the big metal strip from which planchets are punched did not advance enough before the next punch, and it caught some of the previous cutout curve. You can confirm this by the weakness you see on the obverse directly opposite the clip - that's called the Blakesley Effect in honor of the guy who defined it.

I'm thinking that when these are created, they are created in a line of similar coins across the width of the planchet stock which could be - I don't know - 10 at a time, pretty much all just alike. Whether or not QA catches them and keeps them from leaving the Mint is another thing.

Nice clip! There are tons of clipped planchet nickels for sale online, but maybe not for that particular year.

That's an asking price, Doesn't mean they'll get it. I've seen these sell for a few bucks up to about 10 bucks depending on size of clip & condition

I'm not real sure what that means but let see what these two similar coins actually sell for.

Neither of those are exactly "similar" to this one. Those are both double clipped planchets, this one is single clipped. Isn't there an ebay history that can be searched instead of waiting for a current auction to end?

No two clip are exactly alike anyway.Double clips normally bring a little more in premium. The listings end in about ten min.The point is clips do not bring a lot of money
