MS-65, I can not see the details for the forehead though the lighting could be hiding them. Color I would go RB, the obverse is a solid red, the reverse has a good portion of it brown.

I am going MS-63 RB. If that is a blast on the back of the head and dinged on the cheek, that would be my high grade. Being in a holder, the plastic can always mask things or add marks that are not there. Still a very nice coin.

Thad

I have been looking at this coin off and on for a couple of days ,,when I first looked at it I was thinking AU-58 MS-62 slider grade .

But I think the coin is a weak strike for the year and mint ,, I see a couple of distracting hits in the hair on the obverse as well as a hit on the cheek ,,by most standards these are in focal areas and hit the obverse with a -4 the reverse although it is somewhat void of distracting marks in focal areas is somewhat flat in eye appeal .

My guess is 64 brown at least from the pics I do not see a whole lot of anything but brown and green .

anyway if it was in my collection MS-64 Brn would be on the holder .

I am learning about Lincoln Cent grading as of recently.
They seem to be in a diff. world all on there own when it comes to grading, so I am grading
only on the fact that this is a coin, period.
the strike seems sufficient enough as to not take away
from any worn details, which there are. I will just post my opinion
and will watch this as well as other lincolns to get a better idea
as how they are graded and why they receive certain grades.
I say in the AU range and no higher. (whether 50,55 or 58 I will have
to wait and see)

Thad, I figured it was something like that, I checked Heritage and was looking at higher grades, this year had weak LDS dies so they must grade on a scale. They had a MS66 that looked a little nice than the one posted so that is why I went with my grade. I bought a good book that explains each years dies and is pretty good. The Standard Guide to the Lincoln Cent by Sol Taylor, if you are interested I can post a link to purchase the book and join the Society of Lincoln Cent Collectors. It is a pretty good newsletter, they have a mail bid section and some nice articles by Chuck and the author Sol

Chris, I knew it was a tough call on this coin. Actually, I was just browsing Heritage myself and ran across it. The grade absolutely caught me off-guard too. I would have said the same comments as yourself and Metalman. Truthfully, I HATE that coin...it's just fugly IMO. Once again, "buy the coin and not the holder" applies. I like browsing Heritage for the pics and to hone my picture grading.

Yea, hook me up with that book link and Society link if you'd be so kind. I'm very interested in that! As you know, all I care about is Lincoln's right now. I can't learn enough about them and I've been dying for a die state guide....I didn't even know a book with them existed.

Here is the link- http://www.scvhistory.com/scvhistor...or-order.htm . I got the book with the 2 year membership to the SLCC for $29. Sol is a really nice guy, I talked to him on the phone when I won some auctions in the mail bid, he is one of the experts in the Lincoln field. Check out the web site too, there are some interesting articles there.

I think you guys will like some of the articles Sol and Chuck write for the newletter, the book is pretty interesting, I do not have Chucks book but they are probably similar. I figured what the heck for the 9 bucks for 2 years of quarterly news letters and some nice mail bid auctions.
