I know nothing of ancient coins, but saw this book at the used book store and thought it was interesting looking.

Numismatic Notes and Monographs, No. 156
The Minting of Antoniniani A.D. 238-249 and the Smyrna Hoard

By Samuel K. Eddy

Published by The American Numismatic Society, New York, 1967

Do any of you guys know much about the book, or the Smyrna Hoard?

I can post pics if you want.

Thanks,

Matt

Not one that I've seen, but the have been so many books published on ancients it's difficult to keep track of them all. I have over 100 books in PDF form and 40 or so in printed form.

I know this book well. It is a die study of a hoard. It is not intended for collectors and has little to interest them. It is a scholarly study of dies. He finds minor distinctions that he regards as indicating the coin is from a different die than other, extremely similar, strikes. Not everyone agrees with his die identities.
I don't see why anyone but a die-study scholar would want this monograph.

I can respond to the comment by augustus. For definitive study of the chronology of a series of coins, die studies are an important tool to demonstrating linkages and establishing a relative chronology. Casual collectors who are only interested in a type collection, with representative examples of the myriad of types for an emperor or a period of time, probably aren't likely to give a book like this much attention. But serious students of a particular emperor or series, who intend to explore the coins in depth, such as students at the ANS summer program, or doctoral candidates in certain classical studies, will find it necessary to learn how to do die studies as part of their program. In that regard the study you have purchased can literally become a textbook and guide.

[Edit] Lest I overlook mention of it, a study like this can give the most authoritative information available on the coins it discusses. While that will not be the last word on the subject, it is certainly something that will have to be taken into consideration by later students.
