What are you guys thoughts on Heritage as an auction house for US coinage? Anyone bid and purchase coins from them? I tend to do some buying during their weekly coin auctions and have had pretty good luck with actually getting some value for my buck. Not everything is a bargain, but I've been able to get some better end stuff for the lower end of the cost spectrum. I've never gotten a steal on anything, but don't expect to.

I've got two bids in right now that are closing this week. You have to be careful bidding in their auctions. Make SURE you take into account the buyer's fee and S&H or you'll REALLY overpay.

Many of my best-ever purchases have come from Heritage. As kanga mentioned, though, with an auction house you have to factor the house's cut in your bid because the load falls on the buyer. This is more or less true of all similar venues, though. Heritage is just like ebay - the 800lb gorilla in their niche, offering the advantage of wide selection to the buyer and large audience to the seller.

If you're in the market to sell coins, are you likely to do better with them over selling to a dealer?

Heritage is where I get most of my coins and close second is Stack's. Just recently won few gold coins from the CICF auction and have bids in on the CSNS US coin Auction. I love this auction house and the service they provide.

Unless very unlucky, you will always do better selling at retail than selling at wholesale, and a dealer cannot give you retail. He won't profit from the purchase. Just understand that "retail" is not what the coin sold for at Heritage, it's what the coin sold for aside their cut. Enough people do not factor that thinking when using auction venues to determine an appropriate price, that the perceived retail value is artificially skewed upwards.

Heritage auctions usually have a lot of material to select from and pretty good customer service, however I think their fees are high and if you are selling you need $5,000 minimum. You may want to check out Great Collections, they have lower fees.

I have bought a few coins at Heritage, and bid on a lot more. I am fairly selective right now and it seems like I tend to be outbid but that's ok. When I do pick up more coins they will be for a good price. If you are looking for anything from nice type coins to higher end pieces Heritage is the place. I also like dealing with a company with good customer service rather than ebay where I gather that they don't care...

I got an 1884-CC GSA Morgan dollar through a Heritage auction and the coin came with an incorrect certificate. The certificate serial number begins with 83 not 84 as it should. I have sent them an email and they asked for the certificate number but I do not see how that is going to make this wrong right. They said they are going to look for the correct certificate for my coin. I seriously doubt they even have it as it was probably sent out with a different coin from the same auction.
