I just picked up $100 CRW nickels from one of my pickup banks. The teller told me that an older man brought them in. The wrappers look aged a bit and some are marked "1964". I've searched a couple and it appears that this man collected these nickels sometime in the late 1980's because a lot of the 80's nickels are uncirculated. I don't think I'm going to find any pre 1960 nickels in this bunch because I assume the man knew enough not to let the keepers go. My question is, what could I be looking for? Should I check for full steps? Do any of you guys keep any specific nickels 1960-1989? I'm kind of at a loss because I usually only focus on pre 1960 nickels. Maybe now would be a good time to start an album post 1962. Any advice is greatly appreciated!! Thanks, James

I'd start an album and use BU coins from the rolls. Unless you'd like to keep the remaining BU nickels for a very long time in hopes they'll be worth more than face value, I'd return them to the bank. Also, you should consider asking the bank if the older gentleman deposited any other coins and buy them...imagine if he deposited rolls of halves with "64" written on them...

Oh yeah, I did ask the teller if he had brought in any other coins and she said it was just nickels. So, far I have pulled a couple BU 70's and 80's that I'll keep. Not expecting much out of these rolls. Thanks berto for the reply.

I ended up keeping a few of the 80's BU coins with full steps. Just got a couple 40's and 50's but did find a 1945S. Better than I was expecting.

There are many DDOs and DDRs for the early 60s nickels, many RPMs in the early 60s too. There are lesser sought varieties that might be worth investigating, especially given the grade of coins you've been handed. I'd be looking for doubled dies in your lot of nickels (e.g. 1981D-1DR coins, etc.).

Truth be told, if you're looking for value out of CRH, you are more likely to get it from a variety nickel rather than a pre-1960 keeper. Best of luck on your hunt!!
