i need some help attributing this coin... got it off ebay, was planning on cleaing it but once I got it in hand...i decided to leave it be. anyway, I wanted a half follis with a cross in the left field. there appears to be nothing in the right field, I don't think it is worn enough to totally erase something there. if that is the case, this is a difficult coin to find online. i did find a member gallery pic of the type at forum listed as this.. MIB 47, DO 31, BMC 63, BN 3-7, Sear 38 is that correct? thanks in advance....to ski and anyone else. Edited by chrsmat71 04/21/2015 10:45 pm

Might have helped. I just came back to say Anastasius, when I saw your correction (of my guess).
I am afraid that apart from knowing how to spell the word, the Byzantine era is one I haven't reached yet (I am still in the 'Empire') so I will leave it to Ski or FR to help you.

awesome, thanks ski!
the bust looks pretty similar to a gratian style coin TC, that wasn't far off....and still in the era where "the empire" and the byzantines blur together.

The obverse legend says: "D. N. ANASTA-SIVS P. P. AVG". Anastasius made the monetary reform of his brass coins, marking them with a big letter to indicate their value: M- 40 Nummi (Follis) Delta Gamma- 33 Nummi (very rare) K- 20 Nummi (Half follis) IS- 16 Nummi (very rare) IB- 12 Nummi (Dodecanummium, very rare denomination coined in Egypt only) I- 10 nummi (Decanummium) H- 8 nummi (octanummium, very rare) Epsilon- 5 Nummi (Pentanummium) Delta- 4 nummi (tetranummium, very rare) B- 2 nummi (very rare)

If anyone is going to buy Byzantine coins I highly recommend the second edition of Sear's "Byzantine Coins and Their Values" book. It is very nearly complete for types.
