G'day, my guess is it's a token for use in a shop associated with a school. See: http://www.liceoeuropa.com/I don't know how the Spanish used to notate their money, but "1/-" would have meant "one shilling" to anyone familiar with pre-decimal British currency. Peter |

Unfortunately this college Liceo Europeo from Zaragoza (Spain) was established in 1982 ( http://www.liceo-europeo.es/);there are a little difference in the designation LICEO EUROPA. I send an email to the Director last year but I didn't have received any answer.JSalgado |

The obverse is clearly in the same style as that of many British, Australian and South African club tokens and check-pieces issued from the late 1800's to the mid 1900's, and as Peter said, the 1/- is clearly a British denomination, one shilling. I'm pretty sure the same symbol wasn't used for any of the Spanish currencies. But the Spanish on the other side is confusing to me - "liceo" is Spanish for "high school" in Spain and in other Spanish-speaking areas, and "fundado" means "founded". At the time, Britain didn't control or own any Spanish-speaking areas, so there were no places during that time period when British money was being used by a Spanish-speaking populace. Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands don't really count, because hardly anyone there spoke Spanish at the time. I think the most likely explanation is that it's from a private school in Britain (or perhaps one of the other colonies), where expatriate Spanish people (embassy families etc.) could send their children to the "European school" and be taught in their native language. If that's true, the tokens may have been used in the school canteen. Of course, without evidence that any such school actually existed, I'm only guessing. Sap, thanks a lot for your message. In Spain the word "Liceo" also is related the society like a casino (playing cards).
The reverse of 1 Shilling can conclude that it could have been used in a lesson to learn the currencies English in a spanish college
(maybe in South America)!!These are only hypotheses.JSalgado

Ah, a Society or Club makes much more sense. Many of the tokens I mentioned earlier from Australia etc. were issued by clubs, for use in their canteens and/or in gambling machines. Here in Australia the German Clubs in Brisbane and Sydney issued tokens; I presume this was issued by a Spanish-speaking "European Club".

Parsifal:: Richard Wagner built the Liceo, also known as Liceo Europa, near the town of Bayreuth In Germany in 1882. Parsifal was the first opera in the Ring der Nibelungen. 1/ was also used in some parts of Germany as a note for groschen, first used in Hannover in 1840's.

There are not much places in the world, where you speak Spanish and pay British. I know only one. And - what a chance - there exists a Liceo Europa in the town's agglomeration: Gibraltar

In "The Tokens and Checks of Gibraltar" 2010 I found a similar token of 6 Pence! However I'm happy because after some time I managed to find the reference I so desired.  |
