I see no reason to think that it is not exactly what it appears to be : a cast cash of the Kuang Hsu reign (1875-1908), issued at Canton (Boo Guwan). Not the absolute most common type (that would be the Boo Ciowan or Board of Revenue issue), but still dead common.

Except, of course, that this one is not "cast" - it's machine struck. Usually, "machine-struck" and "cash coins" are a bad combination, because most genuine cash coins were indeed cast - except for Kwangtung (Guangdong) Province, such as this coin, where modern minting machinery was installed quite early and was turned to the production of struck brass 1 cash coins. This particular type was issued for nearly two whole decades (1890-1908) and over a billion were made, making them just as common as the commoner types of cast cash. NGC page.

You're right, SAP, I flubbed that one because I always think of the indicator for machine-struck as being circular-hole.
