I tell people all the time that the difference between a collector and non collector is that collectors have stories that go along with the things that they purchase.

Do you have any favorite stories that you can tell us about your purchases?

Mine is, back in the mid 80's, I was a salesman covering 4 Midwest states. I would go to the coin shops between calls or was it go to calls between coin shops? Anyway, I stopped at a store in Janesville, WI, it was coins and dishes, nice looking store, large with lots of cases. In going through his coins - he had a 1913 Broad Leaf dime. He wanted $300 for it. Too much money, I thought was a VF but still too much. So I left it there and came back to see him about 6 weeks later and yes, it was still there and we talked some more and I again left it in the store. But I came back a 3rd time and before I left, he said "come back with a $100 bill and it's yours". So I did on a trip about 6 weeks after that. I sent it in to ICCS and yes it came back VF and I still have it to this day.

Mine is of a small group of Austrian coins dating from the 1760s to the early 1800s. I don't recall perfectly but they were given to a family during a war when they were escaping/leaving before it was too late. I only caught a small fraction of the story so I assume they were either given as currency to the people escaping during the Napoleonic wars or during one of the 2 world wars as good luck charms.
Feel free to call me Will.

Mine is how I got to start collecting: I was eating at a nice Chinese restaurant one day between university classes in downtown Toronto. In my friend's change appeared what looked like an old canadian penny. At the time I did not know about the different reverse designs that came before the current one. When I held it, it was a 1920 in F12/VF20. That's the first year Canada made pennies and so it was amazing to see such an old penny still out in circulation. This was about 4 years ago and I still have it in its 2x2 with "first coin" written on it.

That's a great find Paulsz. I only ever found a couple of two leaf pennies and that was from roll hunting many years ago.

McNickel,

Yes small pennies. But do they considering large cents pennies as well? I thought the name penny was given to the small ones only.

Officially they are both called 'One cent piece', the term 'penny' is a nickname. Pre-decimal, Canada had large, copper '½ Penny' and '1 Penny' tokens. After the switch to decimal coins the name 'Penny' carried over to our large, copper 1¢ coin and in turn the small cent when it was introduced.
As far as I know they are both pennies, usually differentiated by the terms 'Large Cent' or 'Small Cent'.

Either way ... you still had a great find!

I guess I'm a non-collector as all my 'storied' coins have been sold off.

About 7 years ago, I stopped at a dealer in South Bend that I hadn't been to see for a long time since it wasn't part of my sales route.

I asked if he had any Canadian and he said no. I have always felt that if I stick around for a while checking out the cases, they always seem to remember something that they tucked away.

Then I asked if he had any Canadian paper and he said YES!

He brought out a wad of maybe 50 bills mostly 1's, 2's and 5's. I bought most of the notes for 2x face. Including some Devil's hair, 1937's and a shinplaster.

But the prize was he had a 1 pound Bank of Nova Scotia 1930 note from Jamaica. I asked him what he wanted for it -and he said $3. So I said OK, at the time I didn't make much notice of it other than it was different. That is until I got home and checked in on ebay. Eventually, I got it graded by NGC and it came back VF25. A nice return when I do decide to sell it.
