Not really crazy. Half eagles, eagles and double Eagles were bagged up and sent to Europe in the millions as trade payments to European governments and banks. I have no doubt this one, along with many others, was thrown into a bag and sent over. Someone in Europe encountered it, took a liking to it and that is how it got saved. Most of the Carson City DE's you now see were saved from the melting pot in 1937, by being exported to Europe years earlier. We have a gentleman by the name of Paul Wittlin to thank for bringing a lot of them back home in the late 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. As a side note, nearly 90 percent of the pre-1933 gold coins you now see for sale here in the US were repatriated from Europe, according to Q David Bowers.
