I'm going through an old file I found on my hard drive for which I've misplaced my notes.
Anyway, this is a Clad Date JFK that was hit by a welder's torch. Notice the blackness of the fields. Coins like this are often cleaned resulting in many harsh abrasion marks too -- a big tip off that they are not what some folks think. Not errors.

Another tip is the "blood cell" shape. Hotter in the center, metal melted faster/hotter, flowed to the outside. The heat will go straight through the coin faster than it will spread to the side as the sides have far more metal to heat and are farther from the flame front.

Would the welder torch cause the clad to kind of look like it is running off the coin? Or is it not hot enough to actually melt the clad?

I would suppose so if held there long enough. Keep in mind there is more than one kind of welding torch. Some are hotter than others.

Ok, Thank you. I was wondering because I posted a coin here a while back that actually looks like the clad was kind of melted. I think someone said it was a fire coin.
