Thanks for any help, I'm thinking it's a lamination issue, but I'm not sure.

This is a lamination error. Date of coin is 1872 not 1972! Ha!

I would agree that it's a lamination issue but the R is struck strong. If the coin had lost material before the strike why would this be?

I think the lam metal fell away after strk. Seems like the R would have fell away too but maybe the work hardening of the field vs the raised letter made the difference?

This one zooms in quite good, if the dirt was gone I dont think you would see to much depth in this small flaw. IMO
