SsuperDdave, you said you are a compulsive mather. I was wondering if you would be interested in helping me out. I would like to have an idea of how many cents I have been through since I started the hobby/obsession. I started in 1971 and of late I go through one box per week every week. There was a few times in my younger years when I look through 5000 cents in two days. I also look through family members coin jars every now and then. I have taken a break through the years but never stopped completely. I figure my number is around 1.5 million +/-. Thanks, John1
John, I did a little bit of editing to make this clearer to the audience that we're not just PM'ing in the Forum.
You've been at it for 44 years. At one box a week, 44 years x 52 weeks in a year is 2288 weeks/boxes, or 5.72 million Cents. $57,200 face. And that's only one box a week.
Looked at another way, in your entire searching 44-year career you've managed to see, in total, one twentieth of one percent of one single year's average mintage. This is why new Cent varieties are being found every day. It would take over 75,000 guys just like you to have a hope of keeping up with production. Of course, they're going to be overlapping, unknowingly checking each other's dumps....
SsuperDdave: 5.72 Mill. What would the average amount be figuring in taking breaks and give or take per week. I would like a realistic average number to brag about
Bud250r: I would guess around 3-5 thousand
T-BOP: Oldest IH 1897 I think MS 62ish probably 1988-D RDV 006 Thats' a toughy,so many over the years
John, I assumed your early heavier days and your breaks are a wash, and just went with one box a week for the whole period. All we'll ever have is a wild estimate anyway, and 5 million is a pretty impressive number to throw out as it is.
Only you can judge how consistently you've held to it, John. If you've never taken more than a couple weeks' break, and not many of them, yeah, you can say that.
John, with the amount of cents you have gone through, give or take 1 to 2 million give us a break. The time and effort you did this is amazing. Let us not forget the number of post you made to CCF sharing your knowledge. You are a teacher.
Pretty impressive John. What strikes me is that over that time and number of coins you had to develop a 'sixth sense' (or is that cents) knowing what to expect on one or the other side of a coin. Pairing of obverse and reverse dies in such. I've tried to imagine what your collection must look like: a date/MM represented for a majority of the year's noted by CC, a few of them attributed to your discoveries, the range of grades, etc. and the value of your finds for $50 face and a whole lotta time. It would be fun to look your favorites over for whatever reasons. I think a best of thread would be fun if you're so inclined. I'd do it but we'd be done in about 10 minutes - not terribly exciting.
It is my understanding that if you consistently do something for a period of 5 years, this makes you an expert in any given field. Since John has been searching pennies for 44 years plus, I believe his title would be, Professor of Penny.
