Posted pictures of this earlier and they didn't do the
doubling justice. The queen's face has been marred by a
Strike Doubling or more appropriately gouging of the eye,
punching of the nose, mouth and chin. Obverse legends
are a mess and the beads are like fried eggs. Reverse
legends are doubled.

How does this escape the quality control if it existed in
the late sixties, and be a Specimen Strike.

See attached and all comments welcome.

you have to remember that these were being pumped out like mad and that they were double struck to be spec. strikes(what you see on the beads and letters of the obv.) IMO this is with in tolerance, as long as the coin had no finger prints, blemishes, obvious errors or things that would distract or be considered damage they were okay for selling. also, I doubt with the amount being produced that these didn't have loups taken to them.

Thanks for that dollarman, just looking at
Charlton 2009 showing 1967 Gold Black leather case Specimen
Sets at 337,687. Not a crazy number. The business strikes
I can see as there were 6.7 million.

The red leather medallion sets were PL strikes not SP,
so black leather with gold had the 337,687 Specimen strikes.

you have to take in to account that they took longer to strike, had to be carefully placed in sets etc..., also if I remember correctly they were produced at a separate mint only producing coins for numismatic coins, where they were also making PL sets. then go back roughly a decade when numismatic PL sets were only struck in the 4 figures...quite a big leap.

I am happy their tolerances were slack, an interesting result.
