Poll Question
I bought two rolls of 2005 Bison nickels off of ebay still sealed in the box from the mint with the 0000 serial number (the boxes with the detatched leg error coins found). I meant to keep the box sealed but accidentally opened it not realizing what it was when it came in the mail. Since the damage was done I decided to check the end coins in the roll and much to my surprise on one end was a perfect gem detatched leg error coin! The other end also had the reverse showing but had a normal leg. My question is this: Would you open the roll to see how many more there might be OR sell the roll knowing on one end is an error and the other is normal..not knowing what is in the middle? Hope you all jump in on this one because the more beer I drink tonight the more I want to open that roll!

I say leave that roll as it is only because you want to open it. And, because the more beer you drink will increase the odds that you will open that roll. Did you open it yet?

I am not sure those "detached leg" nickels are going to hold their value for long, these varieties seem to come and go pretty quickly, and most of them are probably MS coins since I have not seen more than a couple dozen of the buffalo reverse in circulation since they came out. IMO, open it up and if you find any get rid of them fast. I don't think this variety will rival the 3 legger, and I don't see a price listing in any of the numismatic magazines/books I have thus far- if it is not listed by now it probably never will be. But this is me, I can't stand not to see those rolled coins ! I just have to look at them  |

Leave it alone and let the buyer wonder how many more are in the roll .
With good pic's they will know that there is one on the end and in a mint roll ,,the value might be better than expected as it is .

I must say, you guys are great but not helping! LOL advice both ways and both are valid arguments. I would like to open it just to pick out the best example and get it graded, darned be the results in the long run but the other half of me says sell it for a hefty, or atleast decent profit, and buy a coin with real value. *sigh* I've bought into these scams before (unsearched error rolls on the great auction house site), specially when I was younger, and never was the "lucky" one who actually found what "might" be in the roll so I'm kind of excited. That is coupled with the fact that my Grandma, who's collection I inherited, always talked about keeping an eye out for the three legged nickel. I'm pretty sure this won't ever rival that but how the heck does one know?!?! I'll go grab a beer and post a pic in a minute for your viewing pleasure- |

Okay, I khow you're going to say yeah right to this BUT I swear to God that the difference is far more pronounced that what I can get the scan to show. On the detatched leg scan there is actually a mint-like smooth surface inbetween the buffalo and the leg that just doesn't show up in this scan. Rip them open and have fun. sell the errors while you can get top dollar.

Well, thought I would make one last post before hitting the sack, I opened them and............. *drum roll*............ the three leg buffalo on the end of the roll was the only one in the whole roll! *sigh* it is a gem though. It was fun, one is better than none- it will stay with my collection, don't know if it's worth getting graded. I know it's pretty decent MS but there's a big difference between 64 and 67 and I'm not qualified to determine it. Think I should get it graded or add it as a side not to the collection?

If only want it for your collection, you could buy an airtite so it doesn't get damaged. You can always send it in to a major TPG in the future. You could post pictures of the nickle in the grading forum and we can give you our opinions. |
