Your 2nd shot has a nice realistic look.

I'll have to try moving the Jansjo's closer to the coin, well below the lens (this should be like having more diffusion?). My non-gold shots seem to have too much of a speckled/grainy appearance.

I think the diffusion is the difference, not the distance from the light source. I moved them closer because less light was hitting the coin after covering the lights with tissue. Moving them closer, in general would be less diffusion. I will not be offended when someone corrects me!

No, you've pretty much got it right on diffusion - the whole point is getting more light scatter and when you move them closer they have less space to scatter. Moving them further away will actually aid diffusion, not closer.

This sensor noise from high-density dSLR sensors is becoming an issue. The XS does not suffer it, having a lower pixel density.

Gymcoachdon, do you have the ability to postprocess locally? Although your first image was plenty large enough to evaluate, the second isn't and you can likely do better on your own computer than the Optimizer here as far as image size goes. I have no trouble at all fitting 1000px images into 250kb with the Gimp.

Pepactonius (firgive me if I already should know), what camera are you using? Is it a high-density - say, over 15MP APS-C - sensor?

Dave, I have gimp loaded, and actually used it to crop the first pic. But that was my one and only experience with it.

For all coin shots since about 2011, I've used the Canon T2i/550D -- 18MP sensor. The main lens used for almost all coin shots is the "OLYMPUS OM-SYSTEM ZUIKO AUTO-1:1 MACRO 80mm 1:4" lens. This lens is supposed to be mediocre (at least compared to a Printing Nikkor), about the same quality as the 75mm EL-Nikkor lens often recommended here. Some coin shots in 2011 were apparently made with the 100mm Canon EOS Macro lens, based on looking at the EXIF info.

The main difference between the 2011 and 2013 series of coin shots and the 2015 series is the lighting. Based on CCF recommendations, I've starting using two diffused Jansjo lights, with close to overhead lighting, rather than low angle highly diffused lights from before. The new series of pics look different, better in some ways, and not as good in others.

Yeah, I went to a T2i from a 12MP XSi and noticed the "sparklies" from the very first shot. The only thing I can think is the sensor is so pixel-dense at 1:1 that it's picking up individual reflections from surface irregularities. I'm using an XS now and seeing none of it.

For the record, the El Nikkor is the gold standard for "cheap" lenses and if you can duplicate its' results you're in good shape. You'd need the price of a 75mm Apo-Rodagon D - only under $300 if you're lucky - to do any better.

Don, use the Gimp's Scale Image to downsize, and then "Export As" to save the new image. In the Save dialog you'll get a slider bar to denote Quality. I use 80% as the default, and can see no visual changes at 70%. That will give you a 1000px image which won't need the Optimizer. Filters - Enhance - Sharpen is the sharpening routine if you want, and it's good for as much as 40% (using fullsize images; I usually do 20% and occasionally 30% when I use it).

OK, I took another picture, F8 for more depth of field, 1/50th shutter. Cropped, sharpened 25, shrank to 1000, then exported as jpeg 80 quality.
I am having trouble focusing through the eyepiece, I imagine once I tether it will be easier on the computer screen. Also I set white balance before this shot instead of using auto.

Nice images. The first one looks like it suffers from internal reflections from the extension tubes. Look down into the tubes and see if here are any shiny surfaces. If so, you need to flock them or paint them flat black. It may be just one of your tubes giving problems. 2nd shot doesn't seem to have the problem so if you removed a tube that one is probably the offender. Nice colorful coin to do testing on.

All of my toys have arrived now, and I have played around with the live view. Very nice! I do have a question for Ray, after taking the extensions apart several times and readjusting, etc., I really need to get a bellows and copy stand of some type! What are the current recommendations?

My first pictures of the cent using live view. Zooming in to focus was very helpful, as are the test shots. I have a Bogen tripod with a geared head which helps, but I am pretty sure I am still not quite square to the coin. Background is a sheet of copy paper. A bit washed out, probably over exposed a bit.

Since your tripod does not have a focus rail, you might want to get a bellows with integrated rail to make focusing easier. Or you could buy a focus rail and put most any bellows on it. For the first approach, I would recommend 2 bellows:

Vivitar bellows plus separate Vivitar focus rail. These seem hard to find on ebay lately. Here is an example of the bellows:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Viv...em33a24e46e9

And here is the focus rail:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/vintage-Viv...em33a2cf7282

I'm not recommending these, just giving an example. The bellows listed looks a bit over-used, and the focus rail is a bit expensive.

Note the Vivitar is T-Mount, so you need adapters for camera and lens. The bellows is pretty "short" though so adapters can be tolerated and still get Dollar framing with the 75mm lens.

The other bellows I would recommend is the Pentax Auto Bellows. they seem easier to find. This one looks pretty good:

Other option is getting a separate focus rail like this Velbon:

and then get a low-height bellows like this Vivitar Triple Track:

The tripod is my dads, so I am looking at a dedicated base, either copy stand or microscope base. A small footprint would be nice, I have already kicked the tripod 5 times in 2 days!

Ask rmprspms for what he recommends for a stand and if you want he will put together for you, he has 3 different kinds.

What's the largest coin you're planning to image? That will determine the size of the stand you need, and also what bellows will work best for you.
