I recently purchased a 1873-CC No Arrows Dime in the VF range. The description was fun:

"1873-CC "No Arrows" F12. One Known, this
one isn't it!" Not A Real MM"

I have a small collection of counterfeits so I bought it for $39. Well, I guess the dealer's RedBook is out dated like mine. I got interested in the 'Unigue' designation so I checked to see if and by whom it was graded by. To date PCGS has now graded 3 and NGC & ANACS show none.

The total mintage for this coin is only 12,400 so not many coins are going to be extant. But, only 3? Behind that comes the 73-CC Arrows variety with a mintage of 18,791. Just between 2 of the TPGs there looks to be over 80 extant. The 74-CC with 10,000 minted with what I guess is maybe 50-60 extant.

For the rest of the series CC was minted from 75-78. Four years with the No Arrows variety. Their mintages and what I can estimate extant seem 'in line.'

Anybody know the series well enough to tell us why so few 73-CC's No Arrows have survived? Just unfortunate attrition? Carson City coinage is always fun to find out about.

The PCGS Pop figures are wrong, the 1873-CC no arrows dime is still unique. I believe two of the three are the same coin (cracked and resubmitted) and the third one was the result of an entry error that has never been corrected.

As to why it is so rare, the weights of the silver coins were increased in 1873 (hence the addition of the arrows) by the Act of Feb 12th 1873. The act, coming so early in the year, cut off the no arrows coins before very many had been made, And you can see from the mintages of the all of the 1871 - 1874 dimes that this denomination just wasn't called for very much so very very few 1873 no arrows dimes were struck before the law passed, and once it did they could not be issued becuse they were not of legal weight. So officially none of them were actually issued. The one unique coin was one of the coins retained for the Trial of the Pyx, the annual assay of the nations coinage. That dime was not selected for destruction in the assay though, and it was purchased for face value by one of the Assay Commission members once the assays were completed.

Thanks Conder101. I knew it had to be something cool.

Who put up the additional info links? Thank-you!
