Hi all,

I lost out on an auction for a nice Julian siliqua by 3 measley dollars, so I'm trying to fill that void elsewhere.

The prices for his Siliquae seem to vary greatly from what I've seen on acsearch, and I'm hoping some of you all could give me an idea if this is one is reasonable significantly over-priced compared to similar specimens:

I found this one listed on VCOINS
Julian II (360 - 363 A.D.)
AR Reduced Siliqua, 18 mm, 2.2 g.
Antioch mint, (ca. 362 - 363 A.D.)
RIC 211

Thanks.

It's a nice coin, but with that rough edge I don't think it's worth the price. I think the $275 is most this coin is worth.

Thanks for the advice. My gut instinct was that it was a bit high.

The price is a bit steep. If I were you, I would ask the dealer if he could go down some. A fair price in my mind would be $260-290.

I love collecting Siliqua. They are not terribly expensive, but are rare enough to be out of the "common" collectors hands. Plus they look pretty cool!

I never get tired of showing this one off!

Good luck in your search for some Siliquae!

First, that coin is worth at the highest, $250, maybe $260. Second, heck will freeze and the Roman Senate will appoint another Caesar again, before he goes lower than $250.

At the risk of offending some; please bear in mind that this is my personal experience with the different vendors on V-COINS, I have never been able to get a deal there. You may argue it is not the place for a deal. I say, anyone selling anything needs to be prepared to submit to the tried and true maxim that everything is worth what its purchaser will pay for it. Thank you Publius Syrus. Sure, you can wait months or years for the right buyer to come along and pay your marked up hyped up price, but that is not sound business. I spent ten years in retail watching bigger, richer, far more savvy businesses fail using that approach.

I have attempted to acquire 43 different coins on V-COINS. I have failed 42 times. Mind you, I always provide evidence, and usually I am asking for ten to fifteen percent off. No names or details here, but let's say the answers have been in the negative. I always love how six months or nine months later I see the same coin still for sale. It is mind boggling! However it is consistent with human greed, which when combined with an intractable mindset always leads to failure.

So Good Luck getting that coin at a decent price! However, its worth what you will pay for it. Ha!

My experience has been very different Caesar. Every Siliqua I have purchased, except a Constantius II Siliqua, have been discounted. The Magnus Maximus Siliqua I showed was discounted from $350 to $300 plus free shipping. Most dealers tend to discount older stock items. It's worth a shot.
See you guys in a year!

Thanks Caesar and AM.

I happen to live nearby the physical location of the seller, and dropped in today to make an offer. We wound up settling on $275 for it. Seems that's at the higher end of the price-ranges mentioned, but in the ballpark. I have a soft spot for my favorite emperor, so I'm content even if it was a little extra. I purchased a Philip Ant as well while I was there, also lower than the price listed online and in store.

As a side note, the dealer was quite pleasant, and we spent about 30 minutes chatting about collecting and changes he's noticed in the market over the last few years, and he was happy to answer all questions I posed.

Thanks again for your help.
