I was reading my Red Book in math class today and I was looking at page 218 in the 2016 version, same as 2015 version, possibly 2014, and it was showing two varieties of 1799 silver dollars. I noticed the nose and overall shape of the bust of the 1799 over 98 stars 7 and 6 was really off and just an ugly design. I believe this to be a fake coin. Or are do all of these coins look like this? Please help. This first one looks fake

All of the dies were hand cut and had shorter lives than those of today. So there are quite a few different die pairs used, even with small mintages. This is actualy a specialist collection type. Die marriage

Sorry SSK. I was under the assumption that you knew that there are subtle differences between varieties in early US coinage. The coin I posted is of the same variety, just a different grade.

Yeah, I thought that was hilarious.

But.....not really off track.

I remember my 9th grade algebra teacher always telling us that if we substitute money for the numbers in the math problems, we'll never make a mistake.

The only problem I see with the coin is the nose. And that could be from getting hit in the nose while possing for this coins. Possibly hit by a teacher that found the model reading something like the Red Book instead of working.

Keep with the maths, but not bad to think about coins.
