I'm pretty sure this coin is Roman. I think, maybe an Arcadius? It's a little bit smaller than a dime and has a lot of verdigris on it, making it hard to see any details.

I think this is the obverse.

The reverse.

I have no idea what it is. I don't think it is Roman. It has a great patina, please don't be tempted to remove it. Someone else might be able to identify it for you.

on you first pic I want to see victory dragging a captive, with some mint mark in ex. if I'm correct, the bottom of the coin is the left side oof your picture. and ... if so the reverse would be SALVS REIPVBLICAE. I may see a ALV there on the top (which would be coin left).

can make out the other pic, and may be wrong about what I said.

It looks like it might be Roman or a Barbaric initiation. The reverse looks like a wing victory advancing left.

Welcome to the board, coincollector8300.

I was thinking the same...more specifically, Victory crowning the emperor, who holds a spear (just seen at left in coincollector8300's second pic).

I know this reverse type - as seen in the examples below - was common in AE's issued by a number of emperors...

Thanks for the replies! Anyone know what year it might have been minted in?

oh yeah, I see now. I must be wrong. your first pic has to be an obverse then, and right side up...but it still looks weird to me. could there be some brockage going on there?

I suspect you may be right, Chris...there are some telltale signs on the obverse that suggest either brockage or overstrike.

If you are correct that it's Arcadius - perhaps overstruck on another type, in my opinion - then 383-408 AD, I believe. But take my opinion for what it's worth: I don't collect Romans...

For comparision, an Arcadius AE here:

It's taken your pics for me to see what it could be, I didn't have a clue!
