CCF member Markbaer recently wrote the following, in a post about an expensive coin currently at auction: "It would be quite a coin to own though...I only have a small floor safe in my basement, so I'm not sure I'd even be comfortable keeping it in there. In which case it might defeat the purpose of having the coin anyway (since you couldn't really show it to anyone if it was held in a deposit box at a bank)."

As soon as I read this, I recalled a funny editorial from "The Celator" from years earlier. The memory prompted me to dig through old copies of the magazine, trying to find that editorial...and, lo and behold, found it: June 2010 edition.

For those who may not know, "The Celator" was a fantastic magazine devoted to ancient coins. It went under in 2012, unfortunately. Each issue began with an editorial by Kerry Wetterstrom. In this editorial, which I thought you might enjoy, he tells an amusing story of when he was a teen, attempting to learn more about ancient coin collecting...(sorry about the multiple scans...the 100kb picture limit is challenging sometimes!):

I'm unaware of any, VisigothKing. The Internet seems to have superseded them.

thanks for posting BL!

have any of you actually went to someones house to see their collection? I have one time, I stopped by the house of someone I knew from online forums and checked out there stuff. it was pretty cool to talk to someone in person about coins and actually go through their collection, I had seen the photographs.

has anyone had someone come and see there collection? I don't think there is anyone within a 30 miles of my house who would be interested. I've given some coins to local history teachers, they didn't seem to be beyond moderately interested in them either really.

Wow, Chris, first this comment the other day in another post: "I don't think there is anyone that give a flip about ancient coins within 40 miles of me." And now your new comments here. You sound bitter about your location. Just as every coin has a flip side: you can honestly say you have the most extensive, impressive collection of ancients in your part of the world! You're the regional title holder!

No, never visited another collector's house to see his/her collection - but, then, I think the local ancient coin club here in St. Louis fulfills that role...members often bring new acquisitions to meetings to pass around and discuss, after the evening's lecture/presentation is done.
