Hey, I'm thinking of buying a capped bust half dollar dollar, might be AU. The thing is, the obverse image is doubled on the left side of the face. I haven't found a lot on bust halves pertaining to this doubling. I'm sure a photo would help, I don't have one unfortunately. Any ideas?

m9frank,

A date would be even more helpful. We could check the Cherry Pickers Guide for attributed doubling (location, rarity, value) if'n we had the date.

I added a photo to the original message( a bit new to this stuff ) It's a 1834.

I'm afraid I'll go broke due to this new all-encompassing hobby. I think I'd be better off if I told my wife I took up gambling.

I hope this helps ( the photo. I mean )

m9frank,

That's some dramatic doubling! I'll check my Cherry Picker's guide tonight when I get home from work. If the coin is simply double-struck, they don't carry much of a premium.

From the photo I would hazard that this coin has seen a cleaning at some time in the past (most of these have) and is retoning and I would put it more in the XF-45 grade range.

Good luck with the missus!

Ooops! I'm home and checking the CP Guide ... they totally omit bust halfs. I guess they don't want to step on any Overton toes. Maybe someone with an Overton reference can assist.
