Hi All, My grandmother gave a bin of coins she felt were "worth" something... (I'm sure you're all shaking your head and laughing now). So I'm doing some research and found this set. MY set is all bronze/gold colour but otherwise identical to the image (I tried a few pictures of mine but they weren't great) I haven't opened the package... I can't find any reference to a set that would all bronze/gold colour... is it just tarnished? Thanks for your help... I'm sure I'll be read a lot on the forum and asking some more questions. Thanks for you thoughts, John

I also have a 1967 set exactly like this in the same type hard plastic Whitman coin holder, but the coins are certainly not gold/bronze coloured. The sets are quite common, I've often wondered where they were purchased from because I don't think they were sold by the Royal Cdn Mint.
Is the 1c the same colour as the other silver coins? If so, what are the chances that for some unknown reason they were spray painted? Since their holder is airtight, these sets generally don't tone much at all. And toning is never an even colour - streaked, edged or mottled at best, but the copper penny certainly wouldn't tone the same colour as the others that have a silver content.

They appear to be toned - some people like toning, some don't. These look pretty good.

Hard to believe that this is toning...too "perfect" But not the RCM edition. Looks like people said - "private enhancement" Will appreciate for idea: where to get nice box, to keep the set in the separate capsules in it? (well, the simplest - is to take box for 6xH-size air tites)

@jbg21: Looks like you have a nice set of coins that commemorate an important Canadian milestone. Congrats! Quote: Hard to believe that this is toning...too "perfect" ? ? ? From the image shown, the coins look naturally toned - I don't see any reason for concern. The case shown is not air tight and coins placed inside of it will be subject to toning - obviously not as quickly as if they were in contact with sulfur-containing cardboard or envelopes, but they can tone over time based on their storage environment. The coins shown look fine to my eyes. Quote:But not the RCM edition. Looks like people said - "private enhancement" Not sure what you mean by "private enhancement." Are suggesting some inappropriate handling of the coins in their past? If yes, I don't see it. True, it is not an original RCM holder, but many of these sets were taken from the Mint's original packaging and placed in these types of holders. There's nothing wrong with that IMO.

The clue is the penny. Notice the difference in colour between the first pic you posted and the penny at the bottom, in your set? During that era, they go from brilliant red and eventually become dark brown. It's impossible for copper to ever become the same colour as toned silver.
But none the less, you mentioned this was a keepsake from your grandmother. Likely that's of equal or greater value to you, plus often there's really interesting stories/memories behind things that have been in a family for decades, in this case probably almost 50 years. If I were you, I'd seek out the story and treasure the gift.

commems: 1967 was Canada's Cenntenial year and although some people may have taken out RCM coins from sets and put them in 6-coin plastic holders, I know for certain that's not the origin of mine, which was the same, because I have several other unbroken 1967 sets. I strongly suspect they these type of sets were sold in department stores for the Cenntenial Year only. Looking back, in the 60s coin collecting was at it's peak in Canada, the Centennial Year was a huge celebration and people did all sorts of things with 1967 coins In commemoration of it, call it creative enhancement!

I see the bigger picture now, on the PC. yes, the coins have toned naturally. By the "private enchantments" I meant private colorization or layering, when I thought that the colour is "self made" Quote: We sell the Original 1967 coin Case! Correct me please if I wrong, but from the observation, in the RCM 1967 cases, the coins displayed without capsule.

I have two - one will be left as original, and the cons for that: they are almost 50 years in the original package and no toning. The second still would like to have in the capsules in the box - for the best display.

Silveroid: By chance do you have one of those silver toned 1c in either of your sets? If so it'd be great to see the pic of your rarity.....sadly mine are just the run of the mill 1967 reddish/brown copper pennies:-(

No, wildflower, that what I am saying...after so many years (but not in my ownership, cause I got them in 2011), they look like new.

Thank to everyone for your replies. I have no idea how they were stored (other than what they are currently in. I'm still going through the pile of coins.
Have found some interesting pieces - about 10 1944/1945 nickels and 4 JFK Memorial Half dollars in original packaging.
Now I've got some researching to do!
Thanks again,
John
