This 1900 gold double Eagle has been in my safe for number years. On the reverse is a cloudy stripe that goes straight across the middle of this coin.
Could it be a chemical reaction with the rubber band? Adhesive tape? The finish does not feel sticky.
I have never had a coin graded professionally and I wonder if this coin could still be graded considering the damage on the back?
I would also like to ask the members if they think this coin has been polished? Besides the stripe on the reverse, It does not seem to have any heavy scratching, dings or wear. Definitley uncirculated.

Looks like an adhesive tape mark. The coin appears to have been polished so the break is in the polish luster.

Rubber bands have sulfur in them so I am sure that it reacted with the coin. I don't think it was polished. We need better bigger pics to be sure though.
Rest in Peace

LLy22g, to CCF.
As the other members stated it could be from a rubber band.
I do not think it is from tape. Why would one tape coins with this value? Sorry IGE this one is hard for me to believe but crazy things happen.
Do you remember how it was stored in your safe?
Great coin.
Lets see what the members think.
