Say you submit a coin for grading and it happens to have an error or variety and you did not pay the attribution fee or didn't even know it had the error or variety, will they just straight grade it or will they attribute it and charge you or attribute it on paper only and not the holder? Just curious. Thanks. Jeff

They will not attribute it.

No, you have to ask for it by name, and pay extra for the attribution.
TPGs we borne out of the need to authenticate coins as genuine.

So, then I'm assuming all the slabbed coins from different sellers on ebay, where they are straight graded and yet the seller insists they have an error or variety, are in fact coins that were paid only for certification of grading and nothing more.... Jeff

Correct. The seller probably didn't have the coin slabbed, they probably cherry picked it somewhere.

There are some few varieties which the TPG's will attribute unasked - the 3-Legged Buffalo comes to mind as an example - but not many.

Thanks, do you think he Kennedy struck through wire in 2 tiny places will affect the value of the coin? Jeff

I know PCGS and ANACS has a list of varieties they will attribute for no extra charge. I got a couple of 1922 No D Lincoln cents attributed that way.
