Hello! I recently watched the show "Diggers", and I'm now fascinated w/metal detecting. I've set my eyes on a pretty cheap metal detector that I'm thinking about buying. What do you guys think about this detector? http://www.amazon.com/Bounty-Hunter..._top?ie=UTF8Edited by ChildOfTheWheat 06/07/2015 6:26 pm

All I can say is, that it won't be your last detector if you get serious about the hobby. I started with a Jetco Mustang around 1973, I was 12.
40+ years later and I'm only on my 7th machine. Each previous being a stepping stone. Good luck.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

I bought that exact detector for my first one. Great little machine but you will be digging everything. I then went to a garrett ace 250 and now I'm about to get an AT pro. If you just want to try out the hobby then I would say go for the bounty hunter its great to get your feet wet, but you will definitely want a better one after a few hunts if you start getting in to it.

I would also go with the Ace 250 as a starter machine. I use both the 250 and the AT Pro and have found some really neat stuff over the last 7 years. If you are really interested send me a pm and I will tell you how you can get a decent metal detector from Kellyco and a small discount over what they advertise. Plus they have a 30 day no questions return.

If you think he will want a better detector after just a few hunts, why not just get a top of the line model and be done with it? I understand getting your feet wet and getting use to the hobby and all, but I don't see the point of buying a detector just to buy another one after a few hunts and let the first one sit there and collect dust... It doesn't seem like money well spent...

I got a Bounty Hunter cheap from a friend of mine who had it sitting in a closet. I've found a few clad coins and lots of cans and pull tabs with it. I probably need something better for serious hunting, but it's good for just goofing off. If you're going to do it hardcore, just skip it and get something better.

I wouldn't buy that... If you aren't going with a Garret 250/350 or AT-Pro, then I would suggest a Bounty Hunter Platinum. It was pretty cheap at 299.00 with a nice bundle to go with it. I have since about a 11" DD coil and lots of different digging tools, sand and dirt.. The thing with metal detectors is the cheaper they are the cheaper they are. Look for one that allows you to set discrimination, allows you to notch out certain things. If you want to do beach and water hunting, the best and cheapest would be a Fisher CZ21. The problem with cheap metal detectors is that they don't go more then a couple of inches and they can't tell you what you are finding. If you can't spend 300.00 or more, then try a Bounty Hunter Pro, I used one for a week and found a nice gold and diamond earring with it. take a look at this forum http://metaldetectingforum.com/index.php, they have sponsors that will give you really nice deals on equipment. But the first thing you need to figure out, is what kind of hunting you want to do.

My first detector was a cheap bounty hunter (-$100) and it works ok.... I origionally bought it to find something I'd dropped in the back woods, but have since used it to hunt some old cellar holes/houses and it's worked just fine.... You just have to dig everything as it doesn't discriminate as well as the nicer machines, no tell the depth etc... but it works. I've posted this before, but this was my first coin find, hunting the same property as my buddy with a nice machine.... If memory serves, it was about 6" under.... 1820 small date large cent, N8. I'd put it at AU Here's a pic before I cleaned the dirt off.... It just shows the details better, it looks worse but it's just caked on dirt. The other pics are a hair blurry and don't show the details as well as these No complaints with it from my standpoint, lol, it worked as advertised... though if you can afford to get a nicer machine id say go for it, I've since upgraded, though I've yet to top this find, lol.
