What does it mean when the "Active Users" spot in the left margin says "There are currently 39445 users on this website."

Really? Are there >39,000 users perusing this stuff at this (well, at "that") moment? I notice that this number changes frequently--up and down, so it's not active registrations.

just curious (which killed the cat . . . nine times)

Correct, the number of people (or unique machines, so that includes robots and web crawlers) accessing the entire website, not just the forums.

And I think it's "have accessed the website within the past 24 hours", or something like that. So it's not necessarily the number looking right now.

The "active users" counters at the bottom of the main page and New Posts page is a better reflection of the numbers actually here right now, or at least within the last 15 minutes; It's nowhere near that high a number (currently 163 registered users and 558 lurkers).

The numbers are accurate to a 20 minute window. There is no 24 hour number. The server cannot tell if a user actually leaves, like closing a browser or tab, so it drops the session (and lowers the number by one) after 20 minutes of inactivity. So the 39,572 showing at the time of this post means that number of visitors has been active in the last 20 minutes on the entire site.

Keep in mind, at this point, we get a visitor from Google alone about every two seconds. Yep, that's just Google. I've seen topics indexed in less than a minute. Googlebot basically doesn't leave here. As of right now, it hasn't left in 113,764 minutes. I'll let you do the math.

If you every see the number under 10,000 most likely the server was just reset, that resets the number to zero and starts counting again.

I thought it was so high because it includes people who don't log out but have left.
