i want find some books with a lot of pictures of die varieties and errors. I mainly want one on lincoln cents. someone suggested cherrypicker's guide but which volume covers cents? also as for grading if you find a variety that requires a microscope can it be graded do they use scopes or magnifing glasses?

Naturally you just have to get Looking Through Lincoln Cents. There are two editions out and the same person has a web site full of photos of Lincoln Cents. It's https://www.coppercoins.com
Lots and lots of photos of cents. The author states he has taken thousands of photos of cents. Check out that web site.

Justcarl got it right! Looking through Lincoln Cents by our own coppercoins (Charles Daugherty), is the best book you will find, with an overwhelming amount of information.

As for the second part of your question, If a scope or loupe is needed for attribution, I would surmise that the TPG's use them as well. I don't know that they would need a scope for grading though. I think Coppercoins did mention in another thread though that PCGS will only attribute the Lincoln's that are in the CherryPickers Guide. I would guess NGC and/or ANACS would do others.

I'm not sure if PCGS will attribute everything that appears in Cherrypickers. NGC will, but they often use the "well it looks pretty close to that." school of attribution. (DON'T trust any of their attributions of Shield nickel varieties. You MUST confirm them yourself.)

Its always a good Idea to pretty much have the attribution of known varieties and errors nailed down when you send the coin in for grading ,,what your paying for from the TPG is affirmation on a piece of paper inside the plastic with the coin .

a collector should know what He has and not ely entirely on an opinion from the TPG.
