Ireland has joined the growing list of countries which have withdrawn their lowest denomination coins. When will the USA follow? I don't need to repeat the arguments for eliminating the US penny as I'm sure you've heard them all before, but basically it boils down to simple economics. The security costs involved with cash in transit, not to mention the costs of minting the coin, means the penny will continue to cost the US taxpayer millions each year.
