Has anybody read the Barber and the Liberty Seated volumes? I intend to order both, but I am interested in your impressions, thoughts, reviews, etc.

I just got a text that my Seated Liberty Red Book was delivered this afternoon. Can't wait to get home from work tonight and start digging in.

Q. David Bowers sure is a busy guy. Red Book Series #22 is getting ready to ship soon. July 26th is the official launch date but they usually start shipping a few weeks before launch. Personally this next one isn't really in my wheelhouse but I'll be getting it for completeness of course.

A Guide Book of Modern U.S. Dollar Coins

Quote:
Volume #22 explores the full range of modern U.S. dollar coins: Eisenhower, Susan B. Anthony, Sacagawea, Native American, and Presidential. These coins, the successors to the silver Morgan and Peace dollars of yesteryear, have been minted from 1971 to the present day in different sizes, alloys, and themes. All of them are fun to collect, with historic designs to engage the beginner and some interesting challenges for the specialist.
"When I started writing this book, I thought it would be straightforward and simple, says award-winning author Q. David Bowers, the most prolific numismatic writer in American history. Instead I found these coinage series to be as complex and nuanced as any of the classics a delight for collectors!

Research assistance from longtime coin dealers and collectors, U.S. Mint officials, and hobby organizations such as the Ike Group have rounded out Bowers s own active study of these coins. His detailed coverage includes history, mintages, grading standards, die varieties, keys to assembling a high-quality collection, market analysis, and more.

Hundreds of full-color images illustrate the coins themselves, and historical photographs provide rare behind-the-scenes insight into their creation.

A Guide Book of Modern United States Dollar Coins is destined to be the standard reference for hobby newcomers and experienced collectors alike.

So I received the newest book in the series, A Guide Book of Modern United States Dollar Coins. Admittedly I'm not much of a modern coin collector but so far I'm enjoying this book.

I hadn't heard anything about what might be next in the series which would be volume 23. I did a little digging around and I'm pretty sure this is next in line. And it sounds like a nice one.

A Guide Book of the United States Mint

Supposed to be due to release October 25, 2016

Here's are some of the details:

Award-winning authors Q. David Bowers and Dennis Tucker have written an engaging and fact-filled history of early mints in America, from official colonial coin factories to illegal counterfeiting operations like the mysterious Machin's Mills of New York. Their journey continues into federal coinage with the birth and growth of the Philadelphia Mint, the bureau's impressive main production facility. The branch mints at New Orleans, Charlotte, Dahlonega, San Francisco, Carson City, Denver, and West Point are all studied in detail, with historical photos and scenes from today. Bowers and Tucker shine light on the private mints of 1800s Georgia and North Carolinascenes of the earliest U.S. gold rushesand the private and territorial mints of California, Oregon, Utah, and Coloradothe sources of fascinating gold coins and ingots that circulated in the Wild West. They also take their study overseas, to the Manila Mint in the Philippines, which struck millions of bronze, copper-nickel, and silver coins during U.S. sovereignty.

That one sounds nice! I really enjoyed the Secret History of the first US Mint, The United States Mint and it's Coinage, as well as Frank Stewart's The First Mint book, looks like another one to add to my library.

Great news about #23. So far I only have read #3, but I plan to order a volume or two after the hollidays, probably #13 and #18.

About #3 'US Type Coins: the prices are a bit outdated, but I really learned a lot from that one and would recommend it to anyone new to US coins. One thing I find most important is that it's really well designed so you can find info quickly, while the parts about history or specific denominations in general are well worth second, third read.

I can vouch for #18 being a good one. Timing is great for that one too since it's the 100 year anniversary for the 3 coins covered (Mercs, SLQs and Walkers)
