Poll Question
I have this coin, and I have the hankering to crack it out the holder, but after thinking about it I am not sure. I dont really care for slabs but I thought this particular label was worthy of discussion. Should I break it out of the NGC holder?

Then to give it a choice VF is hilarious. The surface doesn't look bad but they call smoothing and is probably the reason the the 1/5

I agree that the larger surface areas of the field on both sides have been smoothed. The design detail and lettering have not been interfered with. The coin may have suffered to some minor extent from silver crystallization, and would have best been left not smoothed.
I understand the dilemma: - slabbed or not slabbed. I am not keen on slabs either, unless the coin therein is for sale.
If it is to be kept, then break it out of the slab.

Sel I am inclined to believe you are 100% correct. Most people would want an argenteus slabbed if purchased from an unknown seller. This seller is quite reputable and for the reasons stated in your observation the authenticity is not a question. Therefore for me at least I don't need the slab for that purpose. My intention is to keep the coin but I fear that breaking it out of the case even with keeping the tag, might hinder its liquidity if and when the time arises. You see my dilemma here. Ordinarily I would be in the "hurry up and break it out" camp, but this just seems to be one of "those" coins.

If you are going to keep the coin remove it from the slab, if not than keep in in there.

Can't believe I'm saying this as I'm sooooooo anti-slab but I would leave it. If you are 100% sure you are never selling it then crack it but if there is even a tiny chance that it could be sold in the future you will be glad you left it in the slab. Pretty much everything I have is potentially for sale, the only things that are not are gifts, coins bought for special occasions or coins that have personal stories attached to them.
On another note, NGC need to realise that simply using the emperors reign dates and making no attempt at assigning coins to mints is, well, pretty pathetic for a service that claims to have 'expert attribution'.

BH long time no see how ya been? You still dealing in artifacts?
So then you agree the removal of the slab hurts the liquidity?

To maintain authenticity and provenance, keep all of your purchase information for ancient coins in a separate ring back folder.

I voted nay ! Surprising considering my opinions on slabs. Generally summed up as "if I want to see coins under glass why buy them when I can visit the museum ?"
Too much fakery these days. I feel fairly confident holding a bronze and knowing what I have (eventually !) But silvered has fooled me since I was young !

I voted to let the coin breathe based on the fact that at this point I believe that "for sale by Ancientnoob" or "ex-Ancientnoob collection" carries some weight. I mean that in all earnestness. I think that a coin sold by Sap or Doug Smith or Pekka K or Areich or any of the other prolific posters in these forums, who have demonstrated expertise over thousands of insightful posts, implicitly has a sort of stamp of approval. Such would certainly be the case for a Noob-owned coin going to market. A naive collector who may not recognize the handle need only do a web search to appreciate the provenance. Granted, though, not every sale venue would list the collection name...
Free that puppy.

BOBL, I am touched by the kind words. Thank you my friend.
It seems the masses are still divided 50/50. We got 20 votes and 10 either way!

I would leave it be in terms of liquidity it will certainly be easier considering Third Party Grading for ancients is becoming more popular even tho the smoothing may hurt it a bit
The 1/5 Surface rating is default for surface issues in this case smoothing
Btw whoo breaking the deadlock one vote at a time
