I have a 1915 panama pacific exposition 2 1/2 dollar coin that I inherited. I've always collected US coins and currency I've obtained through change throughout my life but this coin is above anything I've ever received. It is in amazing condition with no visible scrathes unless you use a loop and even then very minor. The ridge detail around the edge of the coin also looks great. From the history I've read on the coin only 6,749 of the sold and the rest of the 10,017 that didn't sell by 1916 were melted down by the mint. I'm considering selling it so I took it to a reputable auction house to get their opinion and have them send it to PCGS to have it graded. I've never had a coin graded but from what I understand it is smart to have it graded to determine the range of value. I felt like the auction house employee I was dealing with is trying to talk down what the value should be and felt like I was talking to a used car salesman. I'm going to post a couple of pictures and would appreciate any feedback on value and any other info you might have to help me decide what to do when it gets back from being graded in a couple of weeks.

to the CCF.

We have some very knowledgeable members here who can help with evaluating your inherited coin.

Seeking PCGS opinion on grade/authenticity is a good move ... although we could have taken an advance look for you.

Do you currently have any photos to share? Accurate photos of both sides of the coin are necessary for any informed opinions.

Thank you for your quick response and I apologize for my late response but do most of my email/forums through my phone and couldn't get my pictures to load because they were taken in HDR. I just received the grading score back from PCGS and the coin is graded at a MS66. I'd like to have an idea of a range of value before I go back to talk to the auction house and decide whether to auction the coin or hold on to it. Thank you in advance for any responses.

A graded MS-66 will likely realize somewhere in the $5500-$6000 range at auction at a major auction house.

Thank you very much for the info. That's a little lower than what I've seen on sale for seller to buyer sites but should be a safe bet on what I'll be looking at. I went to Heritage Auction house to have it looked at and sent off for grading. They had a MS65 on auction last week with a $6,462.50 reserve. The guy I talked to there offered me $1,000 before I asked to have it sent off to be graded so it's good to know I was right on feeling like I was dealing with a car salesman that was trying to talk me down on the value.

@Cowboys fan, if you check the past 10 examples that sold at major auction houses that were graded by PCGS and NGC, they range from $5400-$6400, so around $5800 is what you should be expecting. That MS-65 that went at heritage for $6500 seems to be a fluke as two bidders got caught up in a war, MS-65 examples are slightly more plentiful than MS-66 and usually bring around $5000. I find it weird now that I look at it, the price difference between MS-65 and MS-66 is very low for some reason. Keep in mind that this coin is plentiful in any grade below MS-67, and population for most common to least common goes: MS-64, MS-65, MS-66, MS-63 (weird huh?), and then MS-67.

That is weird. I can say that receiving this one coin has made me look differently on how I've store US coins and currency I collect through what I find in circulation. Thank you (zxcccxz) for sharing your knowledge on this coin. I will definately be following this forum for up to date info on my renewed excitement for collecting US currency.
